Cellucor C4 Fourth Generation is claimed to be the new and improved version of the old C4 Extreme pre-workout supplement. With new ingredients and a new label, Cellucor promises better and faster results for their new formula. But how well can the new C4 compete against other well-established pre-workout supplements? Read our full review of C4 Fourth Generation below.

Cellucor, the company behind C4 Extreme pre-workout supplement, had made an important announcement back in 2014 when they decided to release a new series of G4 supplements with new labels and new ingredients. The most important change happened with their old C4 Extreme formula, which became C4 Fourth Generation.

According to Cellucor official website, they are an “award winning industry leader committed to premium products, innovations, and most importantly, results.” We found it interesting that the website shows some awards won by Cellucor, including the award for “Sports Nutrition Vendor of the Year” awarded by GNC.

Besides C4 Fourth Generation, the company also offers several other muscle growth, weight loss, athletics, endurance, pre-workout, and post-workout supplements. Some of their best sellers include Alpha Amino – Fourth Generation, B-BCAA, C4 50X, CLK – Fourth Generation, Creatine, D4 Thermal Shock, L2 Extreme, M5 Reloaded, and Super HD.

Benefits of Cellucor C4

Compared to the old formula, C4 Fourth Generation comes with a significant boost in caffeine, and with a new ingredient in Theacrine (name TeaCor). The Vitamin C included in the old “Explosive Energy Blend” was removed as well, but the inclusion of Vitamin C was always a bit bizarre.

One of the most important ingredients when it comes to pre-workout supplements is creatine. C4 Fourth Generation contains creatine nitrate, a mixture of muscle-building creatine and pump-inducing nitrate. It is worth mentioning that the creatine nitrate used here contains 32.5% nitrate and 67.5% creatine, which means that each scoop of C4 Fourth Generation only contains 675 mg of creatine.

Basically, you are not getting enough creatine from this product alone, and this statement is supported by the fact that C4 Fourth Generation official website recommends taking this pre-workout supplement in combination with three other products: NO3, Whey, and Alpha Amino – Fourth Generation.

It is important to note that the most relevant and accurate studies for strength and muscle gain use at least 3-5 g of creatine per day, even on rest days. In fact, several interesting studies used a “boost” of 20 g of creatine per day for a “first five days loading strategy.” While this is no longer popular, the science behind larger daily doses of creatine remains.

The biggest change made to the old C4 Extreme formula was made inside the “Explosive Energy Blend.” C4 Fourth Generations contains less of this blend, but mostly because Vitamin C has been removed.

The main focus-booster remained, however, N-Acetyl-L-Tyrosine. The exact amount of N-Acetyl-L-Tyrosine is not disclosed, but we estimate that the formula contains anywhere between 150 mg and 170 mg. The recommended two scoops should provide a decent amount of N-Acetyl-L-Tyrosine, but nothing out of the ordinary, and less than what other similar pre-workout supplements can offer.

L-Tyrosine is critical as it has been shown to support better focus, concentration, and better energy levels during the workout. N-Acetyl-L-Tyrosine is the most bioavailable and best-absorbed forms of L-Tyrosine, and its addition to C4 pre-workout supplement is a huge plus.

As stated above, C4 Fourth Generation introduces a new ingredient: TeaCor Tetramethylic acid (Theacrine). This new addition can prove to be crucial. Theacrine acts very similar to caffeine, but with far fewer tolerance issues. Taking a quick look at the ingredient background, we can see that Theacrine is an alkaloid that is naturally synthesized from caffeine, as well as from certain plants such as Kutcha plants.

EDITOR'S TIP: Cellucor C4 - Fourth Generation is available in six different flavors: Fruit Punch, Icy Blue, Orange, Pink Lemonade, Strawberry, and Watermelon.

How Much Does Cellucor C4 Cost?

C4 Fourth Generation is available in containers of 30, 60, 90, 115, 120, and 180 servings each. The price will vary from $37.99 for the 30 servings container to $168.99 for the 180 servings container. Please note that the supplement may cost more if purchased directly from the manufacturer, which is quite bizarre.

Besides different size containers, C4 Fourth Generation is also available with various flavors: Icy Blue Razz, Orange, Pink Lemonade, Fruit Punch, Watermelon, Orange Dreamsicle, Green Apple, Strawberry Margarita, Blue Raspberry, and Pineapple.

Potential Cellucor C4 Side Effects

The official Cellucor website does not list any potential side effects associated with the use of C4 Fourth Generation. The product label, however, does list some warnings and recommendations. We recommend our readers to read the label before trying the supplement carefully.

As general information, the mixture of ingredients from C4’s formula will definitely be a bit more energetic than caffeine, and they may lead to potential side effects commonly associated with the consumption of coffee.

Pro’s

Powerful formula full of proven ingredients;
Reputable manufacturer;
Cellucor C4 – Fourth Generation is cheaper than many other similar supplements;
Cellucor C4 – Fourth Generation is available with six different flavors;
Widely available online and offline.

Con’s

The amount of Creatine included in this supplement is quite low, reason why the company recommends taking Cellucor C4 – Fourth Generation with three other workout supplements;
Cellucor C4 – Fourth Generation comes with a set of warnings and recommendations;
Cellucor C4 – Fourth Generation has been associated with several potential side effects.

Final Verdict

The very same question can be ask to basically every single pre-workout supplement available out there. Is C4 Fourth Generation a scam? It is too early to say anything with certitude. The new formula was recently released and the information available on it is still limited.

From what we can see, C4 does look promising, with a few exceptions (like the low amount of creatine included in the formula). On top of that, Cellucor is one of those reputable companies that usually can’t go wrong with their products.

C4 Extreme was one of the more popular pre-workout supplements (and still is as the old formula can still be purchased online) and the new C4 promises even better results. Because the price is more than fair (compared to other similar pre-workout supplements), we encourage those interested in giving it a try.
